The Wiesbaden city administration and the city’s own waste disposal company ELW are planning to procure a total of 61 electric vehicles. A total of 49 vehicles of the city administration and twelve of the city’s own waste disposal companies ELW are to be converted to electric drive in 2019.

A statement by the city confirms: “This is another clear signal that the city of Wiesbaden is prepared to live up to its responsibility for air pollution control and climate protection”, said Andreas Kowol, head of the Environment and Transport Department at the Green Party. From 2022, the transport company ESWE plans to operate public transport in Wiesbaden completely emission-free.

Now the task for an interdepartmental working group headed by the Environmental Agency is to prepare the purchase of the planned electric fleet. Among other things, the individual vehicle models must be defined.

As part of the “Clean Air Immediate Programme 2017-2020”, the state capital applied for funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport in January. A subsidy of 75 percent of the additional costs for the purchase of electric vehicles comes from the federal government. Since June, the city has been in possession of a funding decision for a total of 1.3 million euros.

Integrated climate protection concept from Wiesbaden

Some time ago, Wiesbaden developed an integrated climate protection concept in which the promotion of electromobility plays a major role. In addition to electrifying the city’s vehicle fleet, Wiesbaden also focuses on electrifying local public transport. A few days ago, the federal government promised funding of 14.5 million euros for the purchase of 56 electric buses. The electric buses are part of a larger procurement measure for a total of 220 units.

“By purchasing certified green electricity, we will achieve maximum environmental compatibility in the operation of the vehicles,” concludes Andreas Kowol, Head of Environment and Transport.
