Mobility Startups at the New Mobility World of the IAA 2018

0

The 67th IAA Commercial Vehicles, which opens its doors to the public in Hanover on 20 September, will focus on the trends of future mobility. The future topics of networked and automated driving, alternative drives, urban mobility and the last mile as well as innovative services for mobility and transport will be the focus of the event. As in previous years, the IAA in Hanover has created its own platform for these future topics: the New Mobility World.

The name: New Mobility World (NMW). Exciting innovations will be shown here. Technology companies, the automotive industry, mobility providers, start-ups and the digital economy will be exhibiting, discussing and experiencing next-generation mobility innovations. With the help of New Mobility World, the entire IAA will thus have an extensive program with an experiential character – the future of mobility invites visitors to join in and discuss.

New Mobility World 2018

The fact that the Mobility Startups have meanwhile become an important part of the scene is demonstrated by the startup-investments of the large companies that are present here in Hanover. The Mobility-as-a-Service units of Daimler, VW and Co. alone look forward to a great future. Last July, The Insight Partners consultants published a study that confirms strong growth opportunities for the global mobility as a service market. Annual growth rates of around 34% until 2025 and a market volume of around 360 billion US dollars in 2025: these are growth forecasts that other industries can only dream of. I am curious to see which topics moovel, MOIA & Co. will address at the IAA 2018.

Until the start of the New Mobility World conference, individual young companies will already be exhibiting in the IAA Pavilion. They can be found on the ground floor of the pavilion, in the so-called P11 area. Anyone wishing to meet individual startups here in Hanover today will find them on the stands of their partners. The Berlin-based ride sharing specialist door2door, for example, is a guest at the ZF Group and provides information about its technology. ViaVan and moovel can be found in Hall 14/15 at the parent company Daimler.

Just in time for the start of the IAA 2018 on Thursday, the first info events will also take place, quasi for ‘warming up’. The open-air demonstration area at the IAA, to be found under New Mobility World in the outdoor area of the exhibition grounds, will be used for practical experience. On the size of a football field, innovative trend themes from the IAA as well as the latest features of safety systems in road traffic will then be shown. Connectivity functions such as a rear area monitoring system, side assistant or brake assistant – the digital achievements in commercial vehicles will be presented here.

Four Days Conference: New Mobility World in Hannover

From Monday, 24 September, it will start to get serious for the NMW. Then the four-day conference will open in the pavilion with interesting keynotes, interviews and talks with over 90 international experts and thought leaders. Those who can hardly wait and therefore want to visit the startups that are not present at the large stands of their partners beforehand will have to be content with just a few. For example, RYTLE is showing its cargo bikes, the ACM City has already been exhibited and Daimler has exhibited a Sprinter for the supply of drones with its Vans & Drones project.

In this respect, those who come to Hanover just for exciting Mobility Startups will have to make do on Monday.

Accelerators, incubators and the startups themselves are at the NMW

Accelerators, venture companies and startup centres such as APX Axel Springer Porsche, Factory Berlin, High-Tech Gründerfonds, the French Mobility Innovation Hub Mov’eo, Impact Hub Zürich, the Dutch Startup Accelerator rockstart, the Startup Bootcamp or wayra represent a large group of their own.

IOKI, an invest of Deutsche Bahn or the English startup what3words as joint invest of Deutsche Bahn and Daimler, promise world-class mobility expertise. We had an interview with founder Chris Sheldrick in spring, here is the link.

The LiDAR specialists from Blickfeld and Bleenco, an AI software company, both from Munich, as well as Chargepoint, E-Force One, has-to-be emobility come from the e-mobility environment. I am curious about the Austrian parkbob and the IoT platform Pace Telematics.

“The Mobility as a Service market is forecast to grow by 34% – per year – of course!”

For my own testing, I’m looking forward to Rytle, the professional freight bike MovR as a means of transport in the courier network for transport over the last mile. This is where manoeuvring should work in the tightest of spaces. The makers promise “fast ascent and descent thanks to a special frame construction and protection from the weather”. In addition, two wheel hub motors for the starting aid, a new type of interchangeable box, which the logistics service provider packs ready with small parcels, parcels and other general cargo.

Citkar will be joining in with another ‘join-in vehicle’. The start-up from Berlin can be found here beyond the conventional bicycle and inventor fairs. “Our Loadster can replace the conventional delivery van, so we are consciously and confidently going to the IAA and Intermot” (note: which will take place in Cologne), said citkar Managing Director Jonas Kremer. The pre-series model of the E-Cargo Loadster bike will be presented at the IAA. The news that citkar and Zalando have agreed on a joint test phase for the coming autumn fits in well with this. In Berlin, the e-cargo bike packages of the fashion and lifestyle giant are to be delivered on a trial basis.

Startups enrich the IAA/NMW 2018

This sounds like an exciting IAA 2018 with a great focus on the mobility stars of tomorrow. At the IAA and the New Mobility World, start-ups will not only be an eye-catcher, but also an elementary component of current innovation culture. I am looking forward to discovering the next-generation Mobility topics and – no question – I will continue to report here on LastMile.Zone. Promised.

What's your reaction?

I am interested in solutions for the challenges we face in urban mobility. With 75% of our population forecast to live in urban centres by 2050, we need smart mobility and logistics innovations to survive. Our platform aims to communicate about these global innovations in smart cities around the globe.
